Silvergate Shares Plunge 46%

Silvergate Capital has taken a huge hit, announcing Thursday in an SEC filing that it has cut 200 employees and is writing off $196 million related to its purchase of Diem Association assets from Meta. This news caused the company's stock to plummet 46% to $11.76. Silvergate has also halted plans to launch its own digital currency, dealing a further blow to Facebook's Libra stablecoin project.

Five instances of Governments Embracing Crypto in 2022

Even with the crypto market breakdown we've seen, this did not prevent some brave regulators and policymakers from embracing innovation within the industry. In 2022, countries such as the United Arab Emirates, El Salvador, United Kingdom, Brazil, and the Central African Republic legally recognized cryptocurrencies. They made efforts to provide regulatory frameworks for its use and paved the way for more widespread adoption of crypto in the near future.

US Authorities Expected to Tighten Crypto Regulations

The U.S. is beginning to pay closer attention to the revolutionary implications of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) consulted with investors on Dec. 14th regarding new accounting and disclosure requirements for entities holding crypto assets in financial statements. This marks the first such consultation in five years, with the proposed rules anticipated to be issued by the first half of 2023.
